Hyundai Dealers' Efforts at Fighting Pediatric Cancer Completes 10 Years
The year was 1998. A set of local Hyundai dealers in the New England area set up an initiative to help raise funds for the Jimmy Fund at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. What started out as a humble mission has branched out into a nationwide program that is supported by EACH of Hyundai's 800 dealerships across the country.
Its evolution has been really rapid. Following its commencement in 2004, Hyundai Hope-on-Wheels, an offshoot of this effort, became an independent non-profit organization. In the short span of its existence, it has donated over $10 million to institutions nationwide to help children fight cancer.
The Hope-on-Wheels Medical Advisory Board consists of eminent names such as Dr. Leonard Sender, Dr. David Poplack, and Dr. Dan Wechsler.
During this summer, the Hope-on-Wheels Tour will travel to 32 institutions across the country and donate $1.6 million in pursuit of one noble intention - offering support for further training and study of doctors who are involved in pediatric cancer research.
These scholars will be called Hope-on-Wheels Scholars. Hyundai, with the cooperation of its dealers, has donated six Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles to some children's hospitals.
The 2008 Hope-on-Wheels Tour will hold ceremonial donation events at 32 pediatric cancer research institutions and 30 local Light-The-Night Walks through the length and breadth of the country in the summer and fall seasons. By capturing their colorful handprints on a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle, each of these events celebrates children's lives and their treatment milestones.
As part of its 10th anniversary, Hope-on-Wheels and Hyundai dealers will also extend this program to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's pediatric cancer research initiatives.
